A UK Skin Expert and aesthetician shares what supplements she takes every day to keep her skin youthful and glowing

My daily supplement routine

Amy x

A few months ago I shared a post on social media all about the supplements I take for clear, youthful skin and it had the highest number of views and comments I’ve ever received on a video!

Most of them were asking which products I take specifically, and it was difficult for me to answer for two reasons. Firstly, I can’t post links in the comments section, but secondly, I am a skin expert and not a nutritionist or doctor, so I don’t feel I'm in a position to advise professionally.

With that being said, the messages haven’t stopped since and I truly want to do all I can to help…So this blog post is my compromise. Think of it like a recommendation from a friend – I’m simply going to share all the products that work for me based on my own research, but before you take any of them, please make sure you do your own homework too and consult the relevant professionals if needed. So, without further ado, here’s what I’m currently loving…

Collagen Supplements

Collagen has taken the supplement world by storm recently and that’s because the formulas have now been hydrolysed. This means the molecule is now small enough to be absorbed by the body and there is scientific evidence to prove that it helps to support healthy bones, joints, hair, nails and of course, skin too.

I’m often asked if marine or bovine collagen is better and in all honesty, I’ve tried both and can’t tell the difference. I use this bovine powder most days in my smoothies as it’s cost effective and blends effortlessly. I also rate the Kollo sachets too though which are easy to grab on the go and taste delicious! My next mission is to find a good vegan alternative so as soon as I’ve tried and tested one, I’ll let you know.

Omega 3

Omega 3 has been part of my daily routine for a very long time. Of course, it’s famous for helping our brains to function to the best of their ability but, it’s also incredible for our skin too. In fact, I often think of it like an internal moisturiser.

These little capsules help to prevent premature ageing, soften fine lines and keep our skin plump and hydrated. I take a couple of capsules every day after breakfast and am starting to reach that age where I can see and feel my dedication paying off. I don’t buy anything fancy, but always go for at least 1000mg and will link my current favourite for you here. If you’re following a vegan diet, the best alternative is Flax Seed Oil capsules which are now readily available in all health food shops too.

Probiotics

Probiotics have been the latest edition to my supplement cabinet, and I’m absolutely obsessed. A healthy gut is essential for a healthy mind and body, and I’ve genuinely noticed numerous benefits since introducing them.

For long-time readers, you’ll know I cleared my psoriasis by healing my gut so am forever reading the latest studies, research and data on the gut-skin connection. Science continues to prove that a happy tummy helps to keep the skin clear and free from inflammation such as spots, rashes and irritation.

When looking for a probiotic, you want as many live strains as possible and as at least 10 billion CFUs (Colony forming units). These are my current favourites, and I can’t believe there are so many benefits in one tiny capsule.

Multivitamin

The multivitamin is oh so humble, but I feel it takes such good care of my body. Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing that can replace the benefits of a healthy, nutritious diet, but on those days where I haven’t managed to prioritise balanced meals, the multivitamin has got my back.

My Mum used to give us one every morning as children (thanks Mum 😉) and I’ve stuck with the habit ever since. On reflection, it may be the reason I’m rarely sick and manage to dodge almost all the colds I come into contact with.

Truthfully, I’m not sure they have any direct impact on my skin, but you can’t have healthy skin without a healthy body, so I certainly wouldn’t be without them. I’ve bought this particular bottle a few times now as it comes with a whole year’s supply, which simply makes the habit easy to stick with.

And that’s a little sneak peek into my supplement cupboard. Of course, none of them are essential and if you’re using your 5 Minute Kit twice a day, then all your external skin needs will be met and exceeded. I just like to give my body a little boost from the inside out too because if it isn’t already glaringly obvious, I’m a complete skincare nerd 😂
