Are your eyes ageing quickly? Here's how to treat them.
This week I wanted to talk about what is probably the most popular question in my inbox. It crops up in my emails, DMs and face to face appointments every single day without fail, so I thought it’s about time we covered it together…'Why is the skin around my eyes ageing so quickly and what can I do to help?!’
Before we panic, let’s take a step back and look at why this might be happening. I promise it affects each and every one of us at some point, simply because our eyes are home to the thinnest skin on our body. It’s approximately 40% thinner than the rest of our face and we put it through its paces by squinting, grinning and blinking up to 19,000 times a day!
There is also far less collagen and oil production in the skin around our eyes, meaning the structure of the skin breaks down much quicker and the lack of oil can accentuate any fine lines and wrinkles.
With all this in mind, it’s perfectly natural for us to notice signs of skin ageing in this area at an accelerated rate, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t intervene and correct the situation.
The first thing you can do to revive this delicate area is to incorporate a dedicated eye treatment. There is often much discussion around this type of product as some people deem them ‘unnecessary’ because they think their face products should be more than enough on their own.
However, when we stop and look at the science and general structure of the skin around our eyes as mentioned above, it becomes apparent that because the skin is so fragile and delicate, it 100% needs an extra hit of hydration and active ingredients.
This doesn’t mean that your face products aren’t good enough, it just means your eye area requires TWICE the attention (i.e. an additional, targeted product) to give the skin strength, structure and support…Much like a good bra 😉
In order to get the best results, I always advise picking an eye serum over an eye cream. This is because their thinner consistency allows them to travel deeper into the skin and correct the concerns at the source, which is exactly why our Proactive Age Eye Complex is formulated this way.
Unlike a heavy cream it is instantly absorbed meaning it won’t sit on the surface of the skin causing congestion and ultimately, eye bags. Just one drop each morning and night will target fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness simultaneously and we also use a powerful ingredient called Sesaflash, for an instant skin tightening effect too.
Prioritising this step will have transformative effects alone, but if you feel like you might need a bit more and want to take the results to a whole new level, try combining it with our Pure Roller twice a week.
Microneedling has been proven to increase product absorption from 4% to 70%, so those active ingredients will work harder, faster and even deeper to completely rejuvenate your eyes. It will also help to stimulate collagen production to firm, tone and lift the skin too.
The next thing you can do to help sounds so minor and insignificant, but I can guarantee it has colossal impact. You want to treat your eyes very, VERY gently. So often I watch skincare routines online and the way people scrub at their poor eyes makes my toes curl.
If you pull and tug at this fragile skin, it can cause the tiny blood vessels under the surface to break, leading to dark circles, drooping lids and premature wrinkles.
I tend to see the most scrubbing when it comes to mascara removal. If you like to layer it on as I do, it can be a challenge to take off, but my top tip is to massage your lashes rather than your eye itself. This way you’re not pulling and stretching the skin and can be as gentle as if you were washing a new-borns head.
For removing eye shadow and liner, simply take a corner of our Ultra-Soft Face Cloth and lightly sweep across your eyelid working from the outer corner, in. I can still remember learning to do this when I trained because it feels so alien to work in the opposite direction initially, but once you get used to it, it stops you pulling the skin outwards and reduces the chance of crow’s feet…
You’d be surprised what a difference this tiny adjustment makes over time.
My last tip (which if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have heard me repeat over and over), is to apply your Eye Complex with your ring finger. It has the softest pad and least amount of pressure which means the skin won’t be disrupted during application. You can use gentle patting and light circular motions to help it absorb like a dream and these techniques will also increase circulation and lymph drainage, for brighter, wide-awake eyes every single time.
As with all things in life, it’s usually the little things that make the most impact. If you can dedicate yourself to implementing these tiny tweaks into your daily skincare routines, your eyes will remain youthful, lifted and smooth for as long as possible 🥰
