If you feel as though everyone is suddenly drinking these grinch-coloured beverages, you’re definitely not imagining it. In fact, Google searches for matcha are up over 200% this year and it’s become known as the ‘healthy’ alternative to coffee.
Not only does it promise endless health benefits, but it also claims to make your skin glow from the inside out too. So, is it really the fountain of youth in a cup, or another trend that’ll vanish as soon as the next one arrives?
So…Is Matcha the Fountain of Youth?
Matcha comes from finely ground green tea leaves, which are naturally rich in antioxidants, particularly one called EGCG.
This potent little compound helps to fight free radicals (the things that break down your collagen and accelerate ageing). So in theory, drinking matcha can help support your skin’s firmness and radiance over time.
It’s also gently anti-inflammatory, which means it can help to calm redness, spots and support a healthier, more even-looking complexion. So far, so youthful. But here’s where we need to be mindful…
The Catch Nobody Talks About
Matcha still contains caffeine. And while it’s less than coffee, it does have a diuretic effect, which means it encourages your body to flush out water.
So if you’re someone who’s already a little dehydrated, stressed, busy, or simply not drinking enough fluids, that caffeine hit can actually take moisture away, rather than contributing to that fresh glow we’re chasing.
Because when our bodies become even slightly parched, the first place we tend to see it is our skin. It can start to look dull or grey and your makeup can sit oddly and exaggerate any fine lines.
How to Drink Matcha and Keep Your Glow
So if you love your morning matcha, my secret is to think of it like a supplement, rather than a regular drink. This way you can enjoy one lovely cup for all the skin-boosting benefits, but without the risk of dehydration.
I personally really enjoy a mug of the green stuff too, but my favourite way to use it, is directly on my face.
Why I Prefer Matcha…On My Skin
In fact, green tea extract is one of the hero ingredients in our One Cream Wonder. When applied topically, it intensifies all those antioxidant and calming benefits that help to soothe inflammation, support collagen and restore radiance.
Imagine it like giving your skin all the glow-giving goodness directly at the source, but without the side-effects 😍
The Verdict: Trend or True Glow?
So perhaps it’s a little extreme to call matcha the fountain of youth. However it can definitely be part of a beautiful, skin-supportive lifestyle, both on the inside and the out.
Just sip slowly, enjoy your little matcha moments and let your One Cream Wonder take care of the rest 🙌🏼🥰
