I discovered a skincare trend this week that genuinely stopped me in my tracks. It's called Moodceuticals (mood-soo-ti-culs) and while it sounds futuristic, the science behind the idea is actually more interesting than you might think.
Moodceuticals is a term used to describe skincare products designed to boost our mood through topical application. And just like we know about the wonders of the gut-skin connection, the brain-skin connection is a very real thing too.
Your Skin Feels Everything You Feel
That's why skin can suddenly break out before a big event, why eczema and psoriasis often flare during stressful periods and why eyes look dull and tired when we're burning the candle at both ends. I used to see it constantly in clinic.
We often expect our skin to stay separate from the chaos going on around us, but it really does not. Stress, poor sleep, overwhelm and anxiety all have a habit of showing up on our faces in one way or another.
So, Can Skincare Actually Change Your Mood?
The idea behind moodceuticals is that certain ingredients and formulas can influence our brain chemistry, helping us feel better emotionally and therefore look better physically too.
Scientifically it's a fascinating concept. But at the moment there is very little real world proof that topical ingredients can genuinely alter our mood in the way some marketing suggests. And yet I do not think that means skincare cannot improve the way we feel.
The One Thing We Know for Certain
What we do know is that rituals have a powerful effect on our nervous system. Pausing for even a few moments in the middle of a hectic day helps activate our parasympathetic nervous system, calming the body and creating the perfect environment for skin repair and recovery too.
That alone can have a visible impact on the skin. It's one of the reasons I have always believed skincare should feel simple, calming and sustainable rather than overwhelming. Sometimes just 5 minutes with your 5 Minute Kit or 60 seconds of facial massage is enough to help both your mind and your skin exhale together.
The Real Reason Moodceuticals Matter
I don't think moodceuticals are here to reinvent skincare. I think the're simply reminding us that skincare has never just been about how we look, but how we feel inside our own bodies.
In a world of constant overstimulation, where burnout has almost become a rite of passage, I am completely here for anything that encourages us to slow down and properly take care of ourselves.
Because without a doubt, peaceful and happy people always have the kind of glow you simply cannot get from a bottle. ✨
