Last year I wrote about the rise of doll-like, glass skin. It was a trend that largely originates from Korea and whilst it was undeniably scroll-stopping, I was very honest about the fact that those 10-step routines and flawless expectations just are not realistic for most of us.
So when one of our lovely customers Sarah asked for my thoughts on the Japanese skincare routines currently trending in Vogue, I was genuinely delighted. Not because it is the next big thing, but because it is an approach I have long admired.
Why Japanese skin ages so beautifully
Japanese skin seems to get better with time and ages absolutely beautifully. And it is worth saying right away that this is not about genetics alone. Their whole skincare ethos is refreshingly different.
Where Korean skincare often focuses on creating an immediate, glass-like glow through layering, Japanese skincare takes a more simplistic, long-term view. The priority is not surface shine. Instead it focuses firmly on one thing: protecting and strengthening the skin barrier.
Think of your skin barrier like the roof of your house
For visualisation purposes, imagine your skin barrier as the roof of your house. Its job is to keep all the good stuff in and all the bad stuff out. But when tiles start to slip or fall away, rain gets in. And over time that damages not just the treasured possessions inside, but the structure of the house itself.
Your skin works in exactly the same way. When your barrier weakens, irritants creep in, moisture escapes and suddenly you are dealing with redness, sensitivity, spots, collagen breakdown and accelerated ageing. Often without really understanding why.
Why the Japanese approach just makes sense
By prioritising one simple routine with protection at the forefront, the skin stays calm, resilient and clear long term. It also explains why Japanese skin is so often described as smooth, bouncy and youthful well into later life. Not because of extreme routines or complicated regimens, but because of consistent, thoughtful care.
Perhaps my favourite thing about their philosophy is that it is completely achievable. It does not ask for perfection, gimmicks or unattainable results. Just one easy, well-designed routine that actually works both on and below the surface.
Sound familiar? It should.
If this approach resonates, that is because it is exactly how I designed The 5 Minute Kit. It is built to rebuild the roof first, meaning your skin barrier, before gently treating the signs of ageing, irritation and breakouts beneath. A full Grand Designs renovation, if you like.
So yes, the Japanese skincare trend gets a very big thumbs up from me. And if you have always admired that naturally radiant, lit-from-within glow that Japanese skincare is famous for, you are much closer than you think.
