Microcurrent vs Microneedling

Microcurrent vs Microneedling

Sep 14, 2025 Amy x

When it comes to skincare gadgets, there are 2 that I’m asked about all the time - Microcurrent and microneedling. They often get grouped together because they sound similar, but in reality, they’re completely different.

So, let’s uncover which is better, what’s worth your investment and how to pick the right gadget for you?

First up, microcurrent tools...

I usually describe microcurrent tools like the NuFace and Medicube, as a workout for your face. They use tiny electrical currents to wake up and stimulate the muscles, just under your skin.

The idea is to lift and tone them, just like exercise tones your body. After a session you’ll usually notice your face looks instantly reenergised, more sculpted and defined. In fact, it’s a brilliant pick-me-up if you want an instant refresh before heading out, or before a special occasion.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the results don’t last forever. Just like the gym, once you stop, the effects slowly fade. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it in the short term, it just won’t create lasting impact.

Now let’s talk microneedling...

Instead of working on your muscles, it works directly on your skin. The tiny needles create millions of channels to the deeper layers, that trigger your skin’s natural healing process.

This in turn boosts fresh collagen and elastin (the things that keep your skin firm, smooth and bouncy) and over time, this works to soften lines, even texture and bring back that healthy glow. It also improves skincare absorption by up to 66% too, turbocharging the results of your products.

The difference here is that microneedling gives you changes that last. Because your skin is actively renewing itself, the results build up with each use. It’s less about a quick lift for a night out and more about investing in your skin’s long-term health.

My final thoughts...

Put simply, microcurrent gives you that instant pick-me-up within minutes, while microneedling builds the kind of results that keep getting better and better over time. Horses for courses, if you like ☺️

I actually enjoy both tools and have always used the two of them in clinic, depending on the purpose of the treatment. However if you can only invest in one, I’d always recommend microneedling.

A tool like our TLC Roller is one of those rare gadgets that doesn’t just give you a ‘good skin day’, it creates real impact that you can see and feel in the years to come too.
